In brief. A systematic review (PRISMA, 18 empirical studies from Web of Science) mapped research on nomophobia – the fear of losing access to a mobile phone or the internet – and its relationship to academic performance. The research is largely cross-sectional, often lacks a clear theoretical framework and measures academic performance in very different ways.

Implications.

  • Longitudinal and theoretically grounded studies are needed to understand the effects of nomophobia.
  • Harmonised measures of academic performance would make findings comparable.
