In brief. A multiple case study of 13 organisations in two networks upcycling waste from the food and beverage industry examined how open innovation fosters circular business. It describes two models of collaboration – a circular supply chain and a circular ecosystem – and the roles of the network coordinator and orchestrator.

Implications.

  • Circular business models are hard to build alone; organised collaboration is key.
